How a faculty mentor will aid my success.

As most of you already know I have just recently changed my major to Journalism. Since I have just changed it I really don't have any contact with the Journalism professors except for one. Her name is Professor Barbara Mack. She actually was the one who made me realize that I wanted to go into Journalism. I think that letting her get to know me would be very beneficial to me in the long run.
My goal is to get to know as many professors as I possibly can so that someday when I am looking for a career I can put them down as references. I would like to have contacts that I could talk to about anything and that share the same ideas and interests that I have. I think that would be a great mentor to have!

Club/ Organizations

I ended up not joining a club this semester because I wanted to be able to adjust and be use to Iowa State before I added more to my schedule. The club I was most interested in though was the Water Ski and Wake Board club because I always wanted to learn how. I've tried Water Skiing before and I almost got up but I ended up falling down like 5 times. Wake Boarding would also be fun and it would give me a chance to do something new and exciting.
I will for sure join a club in the future when I know I can handle the responsibility of my school work and still be able to go to the club meetings and events.

VOLLEYBALL!

In my freshman and sophomore year of high school I participated in Volleyball. I played Volleyball since my sixth grade year so I had already had experience. I made it to JV my sophomore year but my freshman year I just played with other freshman. I knew that in order to get a spot on JV I would have to practice, practice, and practice.
So I did and by my sophomore year I had finally made it. I knew that I was not the best person on the team but that did not stop me from trying my best. I was a digger or libero, which is a person in the back row who gets the low balls and gives them to the setter. I was happy that I was in the back row because I was not tall enough to be in the front.
Practicing and being better was very important to me. Our coaches drove that into our heads that if you want to be better at something then you need to give it your all and PRACTICE!
After my sophomore year I ended up quitting Volleyball. My reasons where not because I was not good enough; it was because of how the coaches were. But I focused my attention on school after that.
In order to survive this year as a freshman at Iowa State I plan on doing the best I can in order to get good grades and a good GPA. I was taught that practice makes perfect from my Volleyball experience. I was taught that studying can really help you out in the long run. If I apply these two skills (studying and practicing) to my everyday life at ISU then I know that I will succeed and do my "best" here.
